Literacy

The Literacy Strand is designed to develop pupils’ communication skills in reading, writing, listening, speaking and viewing.

The school aims to develop literacy skills so that children:

  • can use language, according to context and in a variety of forms
  • can recognise and use language appropriately for different purposes
  • can experience and enjoy a wide range of language experiences
  • are confident and discriminating users of language.

Numeracy

The curriculum is designed to engage students in well structured and varied learning activities which afford them the opportunity to acquire and develop the desired mathematical knowledge, understanding, attitudes and processes. Mathematical activities are chosen to promote active participation and co-operative learning principles, which focus on the nature and application of numeracy in the world around us. The school aims to help children develop numeracy skills so that they develop:

  • confidence to use Mathematics in everyday situations
  • confidence in risk-taking when exploring mathematical questions
  • flexibility to use alternative methods of solving mathematical problems
  • independence with mathematical activities.
